H.M.S. Agincourt a 'dreadnought' battleship of 27,500 tons and armed with 14 12-in. guns, was built at Elswick by Armstrong's and launched in January 1913. Originally laid down as the Rio de Janiero for the Brazilian Navy, she was purchased by Turkey in January 1914 and renamed Sultan Osman I. Still completing her fitting out when war was declared in August 1914, she was seized by the British Government - Turkey having entered the War as Germany's ally - and renamed Agincourt. She served with the Grand Fleet throughout the Great War, including action at Jutland, but was broken up under the terms of the Washington Treaty in 1922.
