A fine and detailed builder's model of the Turret Deck Cargo ship S.S. 'Breconian', built and engined by W. M. Doxford & Sons Ltd. Sunderland, for Messrs. J. Mathias & Sons, Aberystwyth & Cardiff -- 13 x 46½in (33 x 118.1cm)
With masts, derricks, rigging, anchors, winches, cleats and bollards, ventilators, deck rails, companionways, hatches, deck winches, wheel house with open bridge over with ship's wheel, binnacle and engine room telegraph, stayed funnel, gratings, engine room lights, four ship's boats with bottom boards and thwarts in davits, and many other details. Finished in red, black and varnish with gold plated fittings and mounted on two gold plated columns. Original mahogany glazed case.
The Doxford "turret" steamer Breconian was built for J. Mathias & Sons of Aberystwyth in 1906. Registered under the ownership of the Cambrian Steam Navigation Co. (with J. Mathias & Sons as managers) at 4,121 gross tons (2,577 net), she measured 350 feet in length with a 51 foot beam, and was engined by her builders. Sold to Tyneside owners in 1917, she was resold to the Italian G. Bozzo in 1926, renamed Lorenzo Bozzo but lasted only until 1932 when she was broken up.
