Sir John Ross's expedition to the Arctic (1829-1833) sailed aboard the Victory, a small paddle steamer and the first steamship to be used for polar exploration. After a successful first few months, the expedition wintered in Felix Harbour and there made contact with the North American Eskimos (or Inuit), one of whom was Tulluachiu for whom the armourer of the Victory made a distictive wooden leg. Although he failed to find the so-called North West Passage, Ross was knighted when he returned home in 1834.
