Lot Essay

The Pacific Steam Navigation Co.'s steamer Orizaba, 6,077 tons, was built by the Barrow Shipbuilding Co. in 1886 for the Australian route managed by their new associate company, the Orient Line. Capable of 12½ knots and with accomodation for a total of 692 passengers (1st, 2nd and 3rd Classes), Orizaba did the run via the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal - hence her portrait by a Neapolitan artist - until she ran aground and was wrecked off Garden Island, Sydney, on 17 February 1905.
