The Royal William Victualling Yard at Plymouth was designed by the eminent civil engineer John Rennie and built by his son Sir John Rennie between 1824 and 1835. In all the site covered 14 acres and the coping stone was laid by H.R.H. The Duke of Clarence, later King William IV (1830-37), who held the ancient office of Lord High Admiral from 1827.
