Lot Essay

The Leyland Line steamer Istrian was built by Harland & Wolff at Belfast for the Bibby Line in 1867. Registered at 2,890 tons, she measured 390 feet in length with a 37 foot beam and was engined by Jack's of Liverpool. Launched on 10 March 1867, she was transferred along with the rest of the Bibby fleet to the new Leyland Line when it was established on 1 January 1873. Initially continuing with Bibby's Liverpool-Mediterranean trade, she was re-engined and put onto the North Atlantic in 1876, beginning a regular fortnightly service from Liverpool to Boston with her sisters Iberian and Illyrian. Sold out of the Leyland fleet in 1892 and re-sold again in 1894, she was broken up on the Mersey in 1895.
