The steel screw liner Britannic was, with her sister ship Germanic, amongst the most successful Atlantic liners ever launched. Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, she was completed in 1874 and registered at 5,000 tons. Capable of a steady 15 knots, Britannic was a reliable vessel popular with the travelling public despite several unfortunate minor accidents during the 1880's. Requisitioned as a troopship during the Boer War in 1899, she returned to the North Atlantic for only a short while before being withdrawn and broken up in 1903.
