This astrolabe was made for the tourist trade in Iran, probably in this century. It bears all the features of a Safvid (16th-17th century Persian) astrolabe, but many of the Arabic inscriptions are nonsensical. The decorative rete fits over four plates, none of which have the peg neccessary to hold them in position. The astronomical markings on the plates are incorrect, and the maker could not resist adding the names of a few stars and planets on them. The astrological information on the back is garbled. Illustrations are given of the signs of the zodiac, another tell-tale feature of a modern astrolabe.
