CANTERBURY BEARS Canterbury Bears was established in the autumn of 1979 by John Blackburn, artist and designer. John was commissioned to design a fully jointed traditional English teddy bear for a young man, as a gift for his grandmother. This project was so successful that just a few months later, the Canterbury Bear came into being; on show and for sale the first time in Selfridges, London, in the spring of 1980. Canterbury Bears was the first company to specialise exclusively in bears. In 1990 Canterbury Bears became one of the founder invitees to attend the Walt Disney first Annual Teddy Bear Convention and has subsequently attended every year since. In 1991, a distribution agreement was signed between Canterbury Bears and Grund Inc., America's oldest Soft Toy Company. During the last four years Canterbury has created over 45 new limited edition bears exclusively for the USA. Canterbury Bears from the Bond Collection
