Lot Essay

A little note from the present owner....
'This bear belonged to my Aunt who died recently at the age of 84. In 1908 her Mother who was in Service for the Duke of Buccleuch, met an Italian gentleman and were married. My Aunt was born in 1910 and was given the bear by the Duke.
The family moved to London, where this photograph was taken in 1913. Both worked to save money to return to Italy. They emigrated in 1915 and bought some land in a village called Olivetto near Rome. Her Father returned to his work as an olive planter. They worked the land for four years when suddenly her father died from pneumonia at the age of 34 in 1919.
In 1920 my Aunt, her mother and the bear returned to Scotland.'
