The following five Lots have been donated and will be sold on behalf of BBC CHILDREN IN NEED APPEAL BBC CHILDREN IN NEED APPEAL BBC Children in Need Appeal is the BBC's popualr charity for children, which raises funds through its annual appeal every November on BBC national and local TV & radio. The money comes from individual donations and organisations and from the thousands of events held all over the country by people in their community groups, in clubs, at school and at work. Together they help the Appeal raise millions of pounds each year for disadvantaged children in th UK The Appeal started as a 5 minute Christmas Appeal on national radio in 1927, but it was not until 1980 that it became the 7 hour long TV telethon that we know today. The 1980 Appeal raised (1.2 million, but as the years went by the total raised by the public in response to it rose to an astonishing rate to reach an all time high of (25.6 million in 1990. The totals raised have since suffered a little from the recession, but last year's appeal raised (17.2 million, up (500,000 from 1992, still an amzing total. After the fun and excitement of raising money, the charity's real work begins. It is one of the largest grant-making trusts in the country and it distributes the money in the UK to help children who have a wide variety of disadvantages. BBC Children in Need gives grants to thousands of charities and other organisations working with children each year. In 1994 the charity gave 3,912 grants totalling (17.1 million, but had 6,400 applicants for over (62 million. With your help they can help more children this year. The charity is very proud of its efforts to reach the children who need help in all corners of the UK. Of the (17.1 million distributed in 1994, (2.4 million went ot children in Scotland, (1.3 million to children Northern Ireland and (1.2 million to children in Wales. (8.3 million hepled children in every county of England. The charity aims to make a positive difference to the lives of the children it helps. The children include those who: -- are living in poverty or inadequate housing -- have suffered abuse or neglect -- are affected by AID/HIV -- have physical or mental handicaps -- are seriously ill -- have rare genetic disorders -- have cerebral palsy -- are the victims of bullying or violence as well as those who have many other types of disadvantages.
