A rare black Steiff teddy bear
with rich black curly mohair, large black boot button eyes, pronounced clipped snout, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, elongated jointed shaped limbs, beige felt pads and hump --20in. (51cm.) tall, circa 1912 (small moth damage to tip of left paw pad, left ear slightly loose)

Lot Essay

It is interesting to see how this bear does not have the familiar red felt backed eyes found on those manufactured for the English market. It is know that similar examples were specially produced by Steiff for other markets.
