Alfred William Rich was born in Sussex in 1856 and was principally a landscape painter. He began his career as an heraldic painter in 1871 and after studying at the Westminster School of Art and at the Slade, he became a successful art teacher. He painted in many parts of Britain but particularly views in Sussex. He was greatly influenced by Peter de Wint which is particularly noticeable in his colouring technique. He died in Tewkesbury while on a sketching tour with pupils in 1921.
