"The Second World War had a numbing effect on me and upon my work. My hands seemed shackled by the terrible catastrophy and in those years I produced little. In 1943 I carved a fairly large lignum vitae half length figure I called 'The Lament'. It was an expression of my feelings for my fellow Jews of Europe"
