The model can be traced back to a design for which Joseph Barly Fenby had already applied for a patent in 1877. It was first built at the beginning of this Century still in wood at that time and presented at the 1904 World Fair in St Louis. Around 1940, the Argentinian architect and designer Ferrari Hardoy and some of his colleagues developed the metal version known today. After World War II the chair was one of the first successful models for Knoll International.
