JOHNNY HANCOCKS Johnny Hancocks was born on 30th April 1919 and played for his local side Oakengates Town before joining Walsall in August of 1938. After the war he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1946 for a fee of (4,000 and between then and July 1957 he played over 340 League games for Wolves, scoring in excess of 150 goals, before joining Wellington Town as player/manager. Thereafter, there were periods with Cambridge United, Oswestry and Sankey's football clubs. He played his first International match for England against Switzerland in December 1948, in a match that England won 6-0, with Hancocks scoring two goals. He played a further two games for England at full International level and was also part of the Dominion Tour of Canada 1950. Despite having size 2 feet he had a powerful shot which helped Wolves to their Division 1 Championship in 1954 and to the F.A. Cup win in 1949. Lot Essay

In the 1948-49 F.A. Cup final, played on 30th April 1949 at Wembley before 99,500 spectators, Wolves defeated Leicester City 3-1. The Wolves goals were scored by Pye (2) and Smyth, with Leicester's solitary reply coming from Griffiths.
