Lot Essay

A similar jar is in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and in the Van Diepen Collection at Fraeylemaborg, Slochteren, Netherlands. C.J.A. Jörg and J. van Campen mention in the Catalogue of the Rijksmuseum, p. 262, fig. 302, that this shape is inspired after a Western silver example and was made exclusively for the Dutch market at the beginning of the 18th Century. Sometimes it would be made into a fountain by drilling a hole at the bottom to accomodate a silver tap as with the example in the Van Diepen Collection.
