The match against England played on 6th April 1963 was to be Caldow's last-ever appearance for Scotland. In the 6th minute of the match the England centre-forward Bobby Smith tackled Caldow and the full-back suffered a broken leg in three places. With Scotland down to 10 men and with no substitutes being allowed, they went on to dominate a game and were worthy 2-1 winners, with the legendary Jim Baxter scoring both of Scotland's goals.
