A NORTH EUROPEAN BRONZE TORQUE
BRONZE AGE, CIRCA 1200-800 B.C.
Of thick twisted form, with flattened leaf-shaped terminals, the central element now missing, 10¼ in. (26 cm.) across; a twisted tapering bronze torque, the twist changing at intervals, one terminal missing, circa 1200-800 B.C., 6 1/8 in. (15.5 cm.) diam.; a Byzantine bronze swastika roundel with radiating meanders, circa 7th Century A.D., 3 in. (7.6 cm.) diam.; three Viking bronze weights; a bronze openwork strap-end; a bronze four-spoked wheel-shaped ornament; an Ethiopic silver interlaced cross; and a silver ring, both 20th Century A.D. Provenance
Items one and two: reputedly found in South Örland, Sweden, about 1 km. apart, at the beginning of the 20th Century. Cf. Christie's London, 6 July 1994, lot 361 for a bronze fibula found in the same burial as the large twisted torque.
