AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE KNOB-HANDLED PATERA, RELATED TO THE UNDERWORLD PAINTER
SECOND HALF OF 4TH CENTURY B.C.
Interior: seated youth holding thyrsos and phiale, crowned with wreath by a satyr, an alabastron and a goat at his feet, a woman standing to his right leaning against pedestal basin, with torch held out, turned to look over her shoulder, hanging fillet in the field, groundline of ovolo below, the tondo within a band of wave, surrounded by white paintd ivy trail
Exterior: seated winged figure of Eros, holding cista, fillet hanging above, the other side with draped seated woman also with cista and holding a mirror out behind, elaborate palmettes between figures
14¾ in. (37.5 cm.) diam.
