AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE AMPHORA
4TH CENTURY B.C.
Side A: a naked youth with himation folded over one arm, holding a dish in one hand, a situla in the other, a leafy branch over his shoulder, walking towards an altar tied with taeniae and with ivy leaf above
Side B: naked winged Eros, wearing jewellery, seated on his himation, looking at an open cista held in his right hand, a ball hanging underneath, a phiale on the ground below
Large palmettes under each handle, meander frieze below, frieze of tongues and palmettes on the neck, laurel wreath under the rim, details in added white and yellow, foot repaired
15 1/8 in. (38.3 cm.) high
Provenance
Acquired by the present owner's father approximately 50 years ago.
