A CYPRIOT BICHROME WARE MUSICIAN
CYPRO-ARCHAIC, 750-600 B.C.
Of 'Snowman' type, holding a tambourine which is held against the chest, with bearded head tilted back, wearing conical headdress pierced with a suspension hole, the flaring tunic pierced on each side below probably for moveable legs (now missing), with black and red painted decoration

Cf. V. Karageorghis, Ancient Art from Cyprus, The Cesnola Collection, New York, 2000, p. 162, pl. 264, for a similar male figure carrying an animal. It has been suggested that these figures carry ritual offerings and that the 'tambourine' shown above is in fact a food offering of a circular loaf.
