Lot Essay

The subject of this drawing, with her long, pointed nose, resembles Germaine Florentin, née Gargallo. She was the former lover of Picasso's friend Carles Casagemas, who committed suicide because of her in February 1901. Picasso began an affair with her shortly after he returned to Paris in May 1901. She later married the Catalan painter Ramon Pichot. See note to lot 433.
