ADAMS, John (1735-1826). President. Engraved document signed ("John Adams") as President, countersigned by Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State. Accomplished in Norfolk, VA., 1 May 1799. 1 page, large folio (18¼ X 11¾ in.), ON PARCHMENT, finely engraved text at top, "By the President of the United States of America," beneath a very large engraved vignette (5 1/2 X 11 1/4 in.) of a light-house on a rocky inlet with two sailing ships (one flying a large American flag) and a distant harbor with setting sun in the background, scalloped edge at top, accomplished in manuscript, papered seal of the United States at lower left, Adams's signature pale but clear, manuscript accomplishment pale, remnants of paste from former attachment on verso. A ship's passport for the ship "Eliza Myers."
