HANCOCK, John (1737-1793). Signer, Massachusetts. Partial document signed ("John Hancock") as President of the Continental Congress, countersigned by Charles Thomson, [Philadelphia], 8 April 1776. 1 page, an oblong (1¾ x 7½), browning, framed with a portrait. HANCOCK'S SIGNATURE, THREE MONTHS BEFORE INDEPENDENCE. A bold signature penned on a portion of an official Continental Congress document three months before the passage of the Declaration of Independence. One year after the initial shots of war were fired at Lexington, the political leaders of the thirteen colonies had not endorsed a war for independence; however, the tide turned dramatically in June and, by July 4th, an official declaration of independence had been written and endorsed. The first to sign, utilizing his characteristic bold stroke and elaborate flourish was John Hancock. Hancock remained president of Congress until 1777.
