GRIEG, Edvard Hagerup (1843-1907). Portrait photograph inscribed and signed ("Edvard Grieg"), n.p., n.d. 6½ x 4¼ in., with copyright notice of the photographer, Reutlinger Paris, in middle of top edge and in left-hand bottom corner, with ink inscription in French, mounted on card with rounded edges, slightly pale image. Wearing smart late nineteenth-century dress, Grieg is shown gray-haired, his head turned, showing his face in semi-profile. An ironic sense of humor is evident in his inscription, which reads "This is not me." Known as the "Voice of Norway," due to his strongly nationalistic style, Grieg used texts by Norwegian poets for his original and characteristically lyrical songs, and set Norwegian folk songs that he had collected. His use of impressionistic harmonies and short melodic phrases influenced later composers such as Debussy, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius.
