The year before his death, Shostakovich notates four bars from the Adagio theme of the 2nd movement of his 14th symphony (1969). Framed with a pensive black and white portrait. The Symphony no.14, premièred in Leningrad on 29 September 1969, consists of eleven settings of poems scored for soprano and bass soloists, strings and percussion, the work includes poetry by Lorca, Apollinaire, Küchelbecker and Rilke.
