Lot Essay

Casters of plain cylindrical shape were made as early as the last quarter of the 18th Century. The present caster made by Pieter Bartholomeus van Linden (c. 1719 - 1779) is, according to De Lorm, the earliest known example, and is dated 1775. Later examples were made by Diederik Lodewijk Bennewitz in 1804 and 1806. Jacob Helweg made the last known caster of this type in 1829.
