Lot Essay

Sold with a certificate from Dr. Ursula Härting, dated 6 September 2001, confirming the attribution to Frans Francken II. Dr. Härting notes that this is an early work by the artist. An autograph version is in the Staatliche Galerie, Schloss Georgium, Dessau (see U. Härting, Frans Francken der Jüngere, Freren, 1989, p. 284, no. 199, unillustrated); in her certificate Dr. Härting suggests that the Dessau picture, which she describes as 'nicht so fein gearbeitet', is a slightly later repetition of the present work.

An Adoration of the Magi by Frans II has a grisaille surround of the same design by Ambrosius Francken II (ibid., p. 262, no. 110, illustrated).
