Unsigned, Edo Period (Late 17th/Early 18th Century)
Of rounded rectangular form, the sides curving toward top and base, the exterior covered in lacquered basketwork, the box and lid both edged with a raised band decorated in brown lacquer with karakusa [floral arabesque] designs in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer], the base with metal fittings for tying-ribbons in the centre of each side of the raised band, the interior of both box and lid decorated with horses grazing by a river or lake with pine trees, in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e [high-relief lacquer] against a gold nashiji [gold flakes suspended in clear lacquer] ground, slight old damage
