A LACQUER OSUMIAKABAKO [LARGE RED-CORNERED COSMETIC BOX]
Unsigned, Early Edo Period (17th Century)
Of red-lacquered cloth over wood, the top and side panels with a black lacquer ground sprinkled with gold flakes and powder and decorated in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer] and other techniques with stylised paulownia motifs, the sides of the inner tray covered in gold nashiji [gold flakes suspended in clear lacquer], the rims matt gold lacquer, the other surfaces black lacquer, the cord-fittings gilt metal, old wear and slight damage
