A BRONZE FIGURE
Signed Miyao, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Patinated dark brown and other colours and with extensive gilding, comprising a standing figure armed with a tanto [dagger] and wearing a coat decorated with horin [wheel of the Buddhist law] designs over a suit of armour with a chain-mail breastplate decorated with a gilt peach, holding above his head an oni [demon] which in turn clasps an upturned bell-shaped fitting supporting a shallow bowl, another demon beneath the principal figure's feet, the whole on a hardwood stand, its sides decorated with archaic animal and floral motifs, signed on a gilt plaque on the side Nihonkoku Miyao sei [made by Miyao of Japan]
