The signature refers to the painter Isen'in (Kano Naganobu, 1775-1828), whose designs were frequently used by lacquerers. For the same design on a kogo by Hara Yoyusai (1772-1845), see Goto Bijutsukan [Goto Art Museum], Yoyusai: Edo Rinpa no maki-eshi [Blossoms in Black and Gold: Lacquerware by Yoyusai] (Tokyo, 1999), cat. no. 70.
