The circular box with flush-fitting lid; polished black lacquer ground; decoration in gold and silver togidashi-e [polished-out lacquer]; the rims finished in silvered metal

The lid decorated with an egret in a stream, signed in gold hiramaki-e at right Isen Hogen hitsu [painted by Isen Hogen], with a red seal

Lot Essay

The signature refers to the painter Isen'in (Kano Naganobu, 1775-1828), whose designs were frequently used by lacquerers.
