Lot Essay

although popular hearsay suggests this helm is from H.M.S. Chatham and salvaged from her beached hulk in 1926, such an early style of manufacture, using a fragile wooden hub instead of cast brass, and the lack of any markings whatsoever, suggest that this helm is much earlier and more likely to be from the first half of the 19th century
