Sir Robert Waller Otway was born in 1770 and joined the Royal Navy, being made Lieutenant in 1793. After distinguishing himself at the Glorious 1st of June 1794, he was promoted Captain in 1795 and took a leading part in the capture of Grenada in 1796. Between 1795 and 1800, he captured or destroyed about 200 privateers or enemy merchantmen in the West Indies and, at the Battle of Copenhagen on 2nd April 1801, he commanded Admiral Sir Hyde Parker's flagship H.M.S. London. Afterwards serving in the Mediterranean, including the blockade of Toulon (1809-10) and the siege of St. Sebastian (1813), he was appointed Rear-Admiral of the Blue in 1814. Commander-in-Chief at Leith, 1818-21, he was made Vice-Admiral in 1830 and Admiral in 1841. Created G.C.B. in 1845, he died the following year.
