Edward H. Cree was a Surgeon, Royal Navy, 1837-61 and served off China during the first Opium War of 1839-42. He also served off the China coast pursuing pirates during the late 1840's.

There is a similar version of the former of these watercolours in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

This lot is sold with a copy of The Cree Journals, edited by Michael Levien, published 1981.
