Lot Essay

Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fraser of North Cape (1888-1981) was Commander-in-Chief Home Fleet 1943-1944, of Eastern Fleet 1944, Pacific Fleet 1945-1946 and was First Sea Lord 1948-1951. He was in command of the forces which sank the Scharnhorst in December 1943, an event that Churchill wrote of in The Second World War that the sinking not only removed the worst menace to our Arctic convoys, but gave new freedom to our Home Fleet. Those who were with him during the action said afterwards that he was entirley unruffled throughout and that he rarely moved from the bridge, spoke very little. He seemed to be part of the ship itself, calmly confident. Two years later he signed the Japanese surrender document for Britain in Tokyo Bay. After the War he was made a baron (1946) and took his seat in the House of Lords where he once said I am a sailor. We don't talk as much as field marshals. He died aged 93 in 1981.
