Lot Essay

BOTH VERY WELL-KNOWN VESSELS, THE SAMUEL PLIMSOLL WAS BUILT AT ABERDEEN IN 1873 AND REGISTERED AT 1,440 TONS. ORDERED BY THE ABERDEEN WHITE STAR LINE, SHE REGULARLY CARRIED 350-400 EMIGRANTS TO EITHER SYDNEY OR MELBOURNE, INVARIABLY RETURNING HOME WITH A FULL CARGO OF WOOL. AT THE END OF A VERY SUCCESSFUL CAREER, SHE WAS ON WHAT WAS TO BE HER FIRST AND LAST VOYAGE TO NEW ZEALAND IN 1902 WHEN SHE WAS DISMASTED OFF THE NORTH ISLAND AND HAD TO BE TOWED INTO HARBOUR. ONCE THERE, IT WAS DECIDED NOT TO REFIT HER AND SHE WAS SOLD AS A COAL HULK, SPENDING HER REMAINING YEARS IN AUSTRALIA.

INVERCARGILL WAS BUILT IN 1874 BY ROBERT DUNCAN AT GLASGOW FOR THE ALBION SHIPPING COMPANY. INTENDED FOR THE NEW ZEALAND EMIGRANT TRADE, SHE WAS REGISTERED AT 1,250 TONS AND HAD ACCOMMODATION FOR ABOUT 400 PASSENGERS. A STRIKINGLY BEAUTIFUL SHIP, WITH PERFECT PROPORTIONS, SHE PROVED FAST AND RELIABLE, WITH EXCELLENT AVERAGE PASSAGE TIMES. EVENTUALLY SOLD TO NORWEGIAN OWNERS IN 1904 AND RENAMED VARG, SHE LEFT THE CLYDE ON HER FIRST VOYAGE UNDER HER NEW OWNERSHIP ON 20TH FEBRUARY 1905, BOUND FOR CHRISTIANA, BUT WAS NEVER HEARD OF AGAIN.
