Of Shiraoka's images, Jean-Claude Lemagny wrote, "The photography of the Japanese Jun Shiraoka rejects all compromise. His images, so dense as to be almost indecipherable, demand extreme concentration. Shadow and light take on such depth that they can be seen both as space for dreams and as tactile substances, a combination that makes them intensely photographic" (A History of Photography: Social and Cultural Perspectrives, p. 228.)
