cover 4d. rose, watermark Large Garter, an extraordinary usage having been applied to a letter intended only for internal French posting but which was caught up in the folds of a newspaper and missent to Jersey. Upon discovering the hidden letter the recipient in Jersey added an explanatory footnote to the letter then reposted it to the intended addressee, affixing the 4d. (over the top of the uncancelled imperf. French 20c.) which was then cancelled with discernible strike of the blue-black "409" numeral of Jersey, showing red "ILES-C/ST. MALO" c.d.s. below, the reverse with blue-black JERSEY" double-arc datestamp of 10 March 1858 (overstruck by various transit datestamps); some light soiling but not detracting from this appealing and most unusual cover.
