KIAOCHOW QQThe port of Tsingtao was occupied by German naval forces on 14th November 1897. This was in response to the murder of two German missionaries. A treaty was concluded on 6th March 1898 where the territory of Kiaochow was leased to Germany for a period of 99 years. QQIn addition to the leased territory, in which all sovereign rights of the German Reich applied, there was a neutral zone which extended 50 km inland in all directions from the Bay of Kiaochow. Although China retained her sovereignty over this neutral zone, a number of provisions were made, which included the right for German troops to march through. Postal control of this area came under the auspices of the German Post Office in China and not the postal area of Kiaochow. A result of this is that most cancellations bear the word 'China'.
