Lot Essay

This extraordinary clock apparently took 5000 hours and over two years to make. Vacheron & Constantin have confirmed that the clock is constructed from the following raw materials:

5.4 kilograms of gold (5400 grams)
0.6 kilogram of silver
0.5 kilogram of rock crystal
100 grams of lapis lazuli
1 kilogram of opal
over 9 carats of diamonds

Villa La Rotonda is one of the most famous Renaissance buildings in the world. Palladio designed the villa between 1566 and 1571 for canon Paolo Almerico and included it in his Quattro Libri. The structure consists of a central block covered by a dome and with a portico on each side and was only finished in the eighteenth century. The interior is decorated with frescoes by Alessandro Maganza and Louis Dorigny.
