A pearlware commemorative portrait plate
possibly Portabello, moulded with a quarter-length profile portrait of George IV above a titled banner, the ozier-moulded border reserved with three panels of crowns above roses and thistles, enriched in colours, circa 1822 (some light flaking to enamels) -- 21cm. diam.

Lot Essay

Cf. John and Jennifer May, Commemorative Pottery 1780-1900 (1972), p. 43, pl. 64. The plate was made to commemorate George IV's visit to Scotland in August 1822, as he was the first reigning sovereign to do so since 1688. See also the examples sold in these Rooms 7 May 1999 lots 636, 637 and 638.
