Lot Essay

Cf. John and Jennifer May, Commemorative Pottery 1780-1900 (1972), p. 119 for a quote from a contemporary circular which described the purpose of the fund as 'the soccouring, educating and relieving those who, by the loss of their husbands and parents in battle, or by death on active service in the present war, are unable to maintain or to support themselves'.
