'An oil sketch of Vanessa Bell of circa 1916 painted over an earlier portrait (upside down) of an unidentified man' (R. Shone, private correspondence, 2001).
A fine group of portraits of Vanessa from the 1916-1918 period exist including Vanessa Bell (1917-18; National Portrait Gallery, London), and Vanessa Bell Pregnant from autumn 1918, which was discovered on the reverse of a later painting A Corner of the Crown Inn, King's Lynn, and sold in these Rooms, 6 March 1992, lot 64 (Mackelvie Trust Collection, Auckland Art Gallery, Tio o Tamaki).
