Collioure is a fishing village on the Mediterranean coast, close to the Spanish border, which Innes discovered on a painting trip with John Fothergill in 1908, because 'it looked good on the map'. It was to prove a constant source of inspiration and the artist returned there in 1910, 1911 and 1912 (see J. Hoole, J.D. Innes, Southampton Art Gallery exhibition catalogue, 1977, intro.).
