Lot Essay

As Lowry got older he gradually introduced more humour into his work. The small series of paintings of brothers and sisters from the early 1960s celebrate family life in a much more positive way than earlier representations of brooding siblings standing in the midst of a detached mother and father, which are such a feature of his interiors from the late 1930s and 1940s, such as Discord (1943; City of Salford). For another similar painting of two sisters, see The gossips (Two ladies) from 1961 which was sold in these Rooms, 9 June 2000, lot 148 (private collection).
