STEIN, Gertrude (1874-1946). Typescript with autograph emendations and additions of a poem, 'Procession', n.p. [?Paris], n.d. [1935], 5 pages, 2° (lightly spotted, first page slightly rustmarked by paperclip.) Provenance: George Sayer (b.1914, editor of The Programme; cf. lots 17 and 20-21).
THE TYPESCRIPT USED FOR THE FIRST PUBLICATION, WITH AUTOGRAPH AMENDMENTS. Although dated to 1923 by Richard Bridgman (Gertrude Stein in Pieces (Oxford: 1970), 'Key to the Yale Catalogue' number 278), Stein's poem 'Procession' was not published until it appeared in The Programme (19 June 1935, no.8, pp.[8] and [11]; the same issue also included Paul Treadgold's 'A Note on Gertrude Stein'), and the poem's first appearance in book form was in R.B. Haas (ed.) Reflection on the Atom Bomb (Los Angeles: 1973), pp.89-92. The poem has been annotated by two hands: Stein has added corrections on pages 2, 3a, and 3b (an additional line), and changes and additions have been made in a second hand (posibly a printer's) in dark blue ink.
