A fresh, inscribed copy of a work that unites two leading figures of the Expressionist mileu of the Weimar period. Meidner was a member of the same Expressionist circles as Weiss, and was 'with his two-fold talent as a writer and draughtsman [...] the representative Expressionist' (Lang, p.54). In the pre-war period he was a leading figure in Die Pathetiker, before being enlisted into the military during the first world war, an experience that had a major influence on his work. Following the Weimar epoch, the jewish Meidner was condemned by the Nazis (like Weiss), and his work was included in the infamous 1937 exhibition of Entartete Kunst in Munich. In 1939 he sought and gained asylum in Britain, not returning to Germany until 1953. Weiss was born in Brno (Czech Republic), and trained as a doctor, before turning to literature. Like Meidner, his military service in World War I influenced his work, propelling him towards an expressionistic and surrealist style, as did his friendship with Kafka. In 1938 he emigrated to France, where he committed suicide shortly before the entry of the German army into Paris in 1940. Jentsch Illustrierte Bücher des deutschen Expressionismus 134; Lang Expressionist Book Illustration 235.
