EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his son Hans Albert, n.p., 11 October 1938, 1½ pages, 4°.

Einstein on family arrangements, the approaching war in Europe, the riddle of electrical atomistics, and the oddities of American life. He discusses the possibility of transferring his first wife Mileva's house in Zürich into his own name--'I do want to make you mother's last years easier'--and worries at the political prospects--'Hateful things could still happen in Zürich .... It's good that you're away from there. One sees all too clearly from Czechoslovakia what a state Europe is in. But it makes me very sad, especially the rascally position of England and France, who have openly decided on a sort of sell-off of foreign possessions'. On the subject of his scientific work, he reports his hope 'that we will really solve the riddle of electrical atomistics. It will be decided in the next few months.' The letter ends with enquiries as to what progress Hans Albert is making in settling down in America: 'Keep a diary, like someone who is stranded in deepest Africa. I regret nothing more than that I didn't keep one in Berlin'.

Hans Albert Einstein had emigrated to the United States the previous year, mainly at his father's urging.
